Audiobooks For the Blues

Specifically audiobooks (great for the commute or lounging around the house, staring listlessly at all the things that you should be cleaning/organizing/doing). If I hadnât already listened to them, I would recommend Cheryl Strayeds TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS and Aisha Tylers SELF INFLICTED WOUNDS. But I need something new. So I turned to my super-smart fellow contributors to ask for their suggestions. Heres what they said: Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes Sometimes when Iâm âmehâ about life, I need a reminder that Iâm acting as my own biggest enemy. And I find that the easiest way to get out of my own way is to say âyesâ to things I normally wouldnât. I have so much respect for Shonda Rhimes as a kick-ass lady of both art and business, so thereâs no better person to kick me into action when my instinct is to hide my head under blankets on my couch and just take up space. Yes Please by Amy Poehler: Not only is Amy funny as hell, but sheâs one bad-ass woman with an old soul wisdom and insight into the hearts and motivations of the human race. I laugh-cried my way through this book and felt like I was better for having experienced it. Amanda Palmerâs book gave me the permission to stop feeling like my needs are a burden to those around me. The release of this realization was utterly freeing. Elizabeth Allen Shrill: Notes from a Loud Women by Lindy West This book is just really empowering. Lindy West has been through and dealt with a lot in her life, and she handles it like a badass. Listening to this book is a good reminder that sometimes you just need to reframe the way you are thinking about something and apply some humor to the situation. Sophie Khan You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero Sometimes you just need to listen to a book with âbadassâ in the title. Bonus points when itâs written and read by a sassy woman who figured out sheâs got it going on, and wants you to figure out that you, too, have it going on. I know it looks and sounds like a run-of-the-mill self-help book, but this really is a special brand of self-help book. Its one of the best Ive found. Ashley Holstrom So Sad Today by Melissa Broder Sometimes I feel sad and I donât want to feel better. Sometimes I just want another person to tell me: âyes, I too am an anxious mess and cannot deal with life even when it feels like I have nothing to complain about.â So Sad Today scratches that itch. Broder is anxious, funny, raw, and so willing to share her issues. She also tricks me into laughing, which eventually makes me feel better. This book is like getting a really comforting hug from a naked stranger. Emma Nichols Redshirts by John Scalzi I donât seek empowerment or sympathy when Iâm feeling sad. I want fiction. I want a story about people standing up for what they believe in. I want a good laugh. I want a happy ending. One of the most reliable places to find those things, at least for me, is in the work of John Scalzi. Redshirts is a personal favorite (Iâm a Trekkie. How could it not be?), but Iâve found that most of his books are balanced. They are all about fighting the good fight, and those doing the fighting get to have plenty of laughs along the way. My favorite part is that, in the Scalzi universe, people find their happy endings. It may take a while, and there is most certainly loss along the way, but they find them. And that helps me remember that Iâll find mine, too. Cassandra Neace You Canât Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain by Phoebe Robinson When Iâm feeling uninspired, I look for a book that makes me laugh and also makes me think. Robinsonâs essay collection about race, feminism, and pop culture is absorbing and entertaining. Itâs particularly intimate as an audiobook because of Robinsonâs engaging narration. Listening to this audiobook is like having coffee with a witty friend whose fresh perspective encourages you to do better. The basic storyline of the text is about a young flower girl that runs into a phonetics teacher who claims that he could sell her as a duchess. The flower girl, which is later known to be Eliza, takes up the offer and starts speech lessons with the teacher, Mr. Higgins. Mr. Higgins is also acquainted in the beginning with one of his respected colleagues who also specialize in phonetics, Colonel Pickering. Persons who encounter a suicidal youth must not preach, joke around, criticize and must never ignore any suicidal sign. From the Suicide Information and Education Center information there are four steps that must be taken after an attempt. First seek medical attention immediately, second seek community resources, third open or keep lines of communication between yourself and the youth and lastly be available for that youth because they will need you. Going through this process of healing the youth may feel a sense of guilt, anger, anxiety and most likely the youth will feel depressed. For determining the state of PSTD anxiety disorder, various functional neuroimaging techniques like SPECT, PET, and fMRI are used based on different parameters like cerebral blood flow, blood oxygen levels, and energy consumption. SPECT is Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography. This technique uses rCBF and neuroreceptor concentrations to indicate state of different brain parts. SPECT is based on the use of ââ¬Å"? emitters to measure rCBF changes in the brainâ⬠. This imaging technique is simple and economical. The equipment and ? emitters used are easily available. On the other hand, SPECT has serious inaccuracy issues. Precision of results decreases when most inner sections of the brain are examined. Because only a single photon is used no positional information is obtainable. Use of nonspecific radionuclides and the injection of radioactive substance in the body make this technique fairly troublesome. PET is Positron Emission Tomography and this technique makes use of two photons instead of a single one as used by SPECT. Therefore there is no lack of positional information and no need of a collimator. PET is easier to use. Signal changes are more traceable with it. However this technique is expensive and needs highly sophisticated equipment and operating staff. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging i. e. fMRI uses hemoglobin and strong magnetic field to produce images and does not involve a radioactive substance as used in other techniques. fMRI does not involve the use of any radiation thus making it a safe choice over others. It provides high anatomical and spatial resolution. This technique is cheap and readily available. However, fMRI has low temporal resolution. The patient has to remove any metallic objects from the body before the scan and the equipment used for the scan is noisy. To measure PSTD the patient is subjected to traumatic stimuli and hence the reactions of various parts of the brain to the stimuli are measured by various techniques as listed above (Francati et al. , 2007). Lanius et al. (2005) conducted a study to assess interregional brain activity covariations during traumatic script-driven imagery in subjects with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For the analysis three groups of people were chosen: one group consisted of people that showed a dissociative response to the traumatic script-driven imagery, the other had a flashback response and the last one was group of trauma exposed control subjects without PTSD people. A 4-T whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system was used to acquire the images and ââ¬Å"The script-driven imagery procedure was adapted to functional MRI (fMRI) .. . â⬠As a result of the study, the first group with dissociative response gave the same disassociated reaction in the test. The other group of people that experienced flashback showed the same result in the test while for the last group the experience was like a normal memory recall. Functional connectivity patterns were different for the group that was disassociated and the control subjects with main concentration on the thalamus because of its direct association with the disassociation. The non-PTSD control subjects showed left-hemispheric frontal activation while dissociated PTSD group showed right-hemispheric frontal and insula activation. The effects of remembering the traumatic event affect the patterns of activation in dissociated PTSD subjects. Insula affects the ability to interpret the signals for state of body and emotions such as pain, body temperature and all. The study showed the inability of the dissociative PTSD subjects to feel the emotions. For the functional connectivity analysis between the dissociative PTSD subjects and the others with flashback an area in the right anterior cingulate gyrus was investigated. This area is responsible for emotion regulation. The study revealed greater covariation with the seed voxel in the right anterior cingulated for the flashback group, as compared to the dissociative group. Although the study conducted has revealed some interesting facts it has certain limitations as well. Functional connectivity analysis was not observed for all the three groups based on same region. The size of the groups was very small for the study. People used in the study had some ââ¬Å". . . comorbid disorders, including dysthymia, lifetime history of polysubstance dependence, and major depressionâ⬠. For future studies it is suggested to have large sample size and studies should try to attend to covariations between clinical symptoms and brain activation patterns. Hopper et al. (2007) conducted a study to investigate the responses to script-driven trauma imagery in PTSD by employing the Responses to Script-Driven Imagery Scale (RSDI) and the corresponding neural activation. For the study 27 individuals with PTSD were examined. A 4-Tesla whole-body MRI system was used to acquire the images. Responses can be of subtypes: reexperiencing, avoidance and dissociation. The study revealed that the state reexperiencing severity correlated positively with activity in the right anterior insula while it correlated negatively with activity in left rACC. These regions are associated with emotional regulations. However reexperiencing, avoidance and dissociation correlated negatively with activity in right IFC (region associated with movement inhibition). All these findings support extreme emotional underengagement. The response states signify the emotion dysregulation in PTSD. The study has some limitations as well. The subjects were mainly women and the trauma was due to motor vehicle accidents, thus the results may not be applicable to a general class of PTSD subjects. The revealed correlations between the state dissociation and corresponding neural activation may not apply to high levels of disassociation. The examination is also not able to establish any direct relationships among the findings and every revealed result is connected. In order to gain further insight into this matter further studies are recommended that may use the strong foundation of RSDI evident in this study but future improvements can be made by elevating the limitations. The article by Kolassa et al. (2007) aims at studying the slow waves generated in various parts of the brain of the people suffering from PSTD due to events like torture. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used in the study of waves. 194 subjects were investigated that involved 97 healthy controls and 97 patients. Patients recorded enhanced abnormal slow wave activity in voxels in left temporal areas in the region of the insula and lesser slow wave activity in voxels in parieto-occipital areas as compared to healthier subjects. These findings imply abnormal performance in the left insula of PSTD. The right prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the left insula region are most subjected to stress. The insula plays a major role in attention, pain perception and emotion. It handles verbal, motor and musical information and performs visceral sensory and vestibular functions. Irregularities in the functioning of insula may lead to troubles in verbal articulation and management of emotional states PSTD patients. PSTD may lead to emotions such as fear, anger and dysphoria in people. The results reveal PFC dysfunction that may lead to weakened disappearance of fear and sensitivity even in normal fearless situations. The study suggests that future research should concentrate on explaining and highlighting the role of the insula in PTSD and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Also differences in parieto-occipital delta dipole densities in PTSD subjects need focus in future. However the present study is limited in its approach in clearing up the role of insula in PSTD disorder and PFC dysfunction. Both these are serious considerations and need detailed examination in future. This territory may have been an alley behind your house, a set of trees on an abandoned lot or even a fort you and your friends built- whatever your territory was, you felt you had the sole rights to it. No other children were going to come into your territory and take it away and if they tried, it was not without a fight. A group of children across from my house have a fort that they have set up and play in. This fort had been vacant for many years- left to whoever stopped or dropped in. See, at one time, there were a group of children who played there periodically, but they seem to have lost interest and moved away. Well, just a few weeks ago, another group of children came to the fort and started really making it quite the spectacle. Day after day, hour after hour, I saw these children at their fort making improvements. They play that they are farmers, reaping crops from the fields of dry crested grass and they set up shops to help with the harvest of those crops. They barter and trade with one another and seem to have the same set of beliefs. Each child gets off the bus at 3:30 and heads to the fort for a couple hours and at 6:30 each day, these children leave for supper and donââ¬â¢t return until the bus drops them off from school the next day. They seem to have similar lives, beliefs a nd aspirations for their fort. A few weeks ago, I witnessed something interesting about the fort across from my house; I noticed a new gang of children hanging out near the fort. Although they were not the same children that I see day after day, they were similar in race and stature. Although they were similar, I can tell there was a difference. The difference seemed to be in their aspirations for the fort and beliefs in how they govern the fort... Aphids Poop Sugar Aphids feed by piercing the phloem tissue of the host plant and sucking up the sap. Unfortunately, sap is mostly sugar, so an aphid must consume a lot of sap to meet its nutritional requirement for protein.à Much of what the aphid consumes goes to waste. The excess sugar is eliminated in the form of a sugary droplet called honeydew. An aphid-infested plant quickly becomes coated in the sticky excretions. Sugar-Loving Ants Tend to Some Aphids Anyone who has battled sugar ants in their kitchen can tell you that ants have a sweet tooth. Ants are therefore very fond of bugs that can poop large quantities of sugar. Aphid-herding ants will care for their adopted aphids, carrying them from plant to plant and milking them for honeydew. In exchange for the sweet treats they get from the aphids in their care, they provide the aphids with protection from predators and parasites. Some ants even take the aphids home to their nest during the winter months, keeping them safe until spring. Aphids Have a Lot of Enemies Im not just talking about gardeners, either. Aphids are slow, theyre plump, and theyre sweet to eat (presumably). A single plant can host hundreds or even thousands of aphids, offering predators a real smorgasbord of snacks. Aphid eaters include lady beetles, lacewings, minute pirate bugs, hoverfly larvae, big-eyed bugs, damsel bugs, and certain stinging wasps, among others. Entomologists even have a term for the many insects that feed on aphids ââ¬â aphidophagous. Aphids Have Tailpipes Most aphids have a pair of tubular structures on their hind ends, which entomologists describe as looking like tiny tailpipes. These structures, called cornicles or sometimes siphunculi, seem to serve a defensive purpose. When threatened, an aphid releases a waxy fluid from the cornicles. The sticky substance gums up the mouth of the predator in pursuit and is thought to trap parasitoids before they can infect the aphid. Aphids Sound an Alarm When Theyre in Trouble Like many insects, some aphids use alarm pheromones to broadcast a threat to other aphids in the area. The aphid under attack releases these chemical signals from its cornicles, sending nearby aphids running for cover. Unfortunately for the aphids, some lady beetles have learned the aphid language, too. The lady beetles follow the alarm pheromones to locate an easy meal. Aphids Fight Back Aphids may look defenseless, but they dont go down without a fight. Aphids are expert kickboxers and will pummel their pursuers with their hind feet. Some aphids bear spines that make them challenging to chew on, and others are merely thick-skinned. Aphids are also known to go on the offensive, stabbing the eggs of predatory insects to kill their enemies in vitro. If all else fails, aphids stop, drop, and roll off their host plant to escape predation. Some Aphids Employ Soldiers for Protection Although not common, certain gall-making aphids produce special soldier nymphs to protect the group. These female guards never molt into adulthood, and their sole purpose is to protect and serve. Aphid soldiers are fiercely committed to their job and will sacrifice themselves if needed. Soldier aphids often have burly legs with which they can detain or squeeze intruders. Aphids Lack Wings (Until They Need Them) Aphids are generally apterous (wingless), and unable to fly. As you might imagine, this can put them at a considerable disadvantage if environmental conditions deteriorate, since they arent very mobile. When the host plant becomes a little too crowded with hungry aphids, or if its sucked dry and theres a lack of sap, the aphids may need to disperse and find new host plants. Thats when wings come in handy. Aphids will periodically produce a generation of alates ââ¬â winged adults capable of flight. Flying aphids dont set any aviation records, but they can ride a wind gust with some skill to relocate. Female Aphids Can Reproduce Without Mating Because aphids have so many predators, their survival depends on their numbers. A quick and easy way to boost the population is to dispense with the nonsense of mating. Female aphids are parthenogenetic, or capable of virgin births, no males required. Like Russian nesting dolls, a female aphid may carry developing young, which are themselves already carrying developing young. This significantly shortens the development cycle and increases population numbers rapidly. Aphids Give Birth to Live Young You might expect a bug that seems so primitive to lay eggs like more other insects do, but aphids are pretty sophisticated when it comes to reproduction. There isnt time to wait for eggs to develop and hatch. So aphids practice viviparity, giving birth to live young. Built in 1939 by architect Erno Goldfinger, 1-3 Willow Road is an example of Modernist British architecture in Hampstead Heath, London, England. He was a modern pioneer of the Modernist movement. Originally from Hungary, he studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He rebelled against the conservatism of the Beaux Arts and and he and a group of students broke away to form a new studio. They at first asked Le Corbusier to be the head of the studio but he declined. It was therea fter run by one of his contemporaries, Auguste Perret. Perret introduced the use of reinforced concrete construction, and whose his rationalist style and passion for the unadorned greatly influenced Goldfinger. Goldfinger resided in the center construction, Number 2 Willow, with his family until the time of his death in 1987. Although the construction of the building was at first disputed it was later acquired by the National Trust of England and is today an historic landmark. Here it will be discussed: the architect, including every salient detail about his work; the content of the Hampstead house building itself; and the context of the work, including proportion and other elements of style. Chapter I. The Architect: Erno Goldfinger Significance 1-3 Willow Road was controversial at the time of its conception, and the residentsââ¬âas well as the city councilââ¬ârejected the idea of its being built. ââ¬Å"The Hampstead house was [originally] built for solicitor Geoffrey Walf ord of Piccadilly, his wife Ursula Walford and her four children from a first marriage.â⬠1 Erno Goldfinger had to revise his plans several times before they were approved and construction could begin. Although a modern interpretation of a Georgian style building, it is an important example of the revolutionary ideas the architects of the Modern period hoped to establish. It was modeled after 18th- and 19th-century terrace houses, but built with modern materials and detailing. This building may be seen as part of the International style movement that has social and political undertones. These particular architectsââ¬âbeing much more concerned with building homes for the everyday man rather than elaborately-decorated edifices that had characterized much of the architecture that had preceded itââ¬âalso set forth to consider the function and utility of the structure. With the advances in new technology, new materials were invented. As such, these buildings were famous for b eing the first to utilize such technological advancements. Many new ideas in the arts and architecture flourished and Goldfingerââ¬â¢s work embodies these precepts. Therefore, 1-3 Willow Road is an excellent example of what one would call Modernist principles. Although he became more well known for his buildings following WWII, the houses on Willow Road can be seen as their precursors. Cultural and Historical Background Hampstead Heath, where Willow Road sits, is a celebrated and picturesque part of London, England. The Great Inflation In late-1922 the German government were forced to ask the Allies for a moratorium on reparations payments; this was refused, and she then defaulted on shipments of both coal and timber to France. By January of the following year, French and Belgian troops had entered and occupied the Ruhr. The German people, perhaps for the first time since 1914, united behind their government, and passive resistance to the occupying troops was ordered. A government-funded strike began as thousands of workers marched out of their factories and steel works. The German economy, already under massive pressure, gave way. The huge cost of funding the strike in the Ruhr and the costs of imports to meet basic consumer needs were met by the familiar expedient of the printing presses. Note circulation increased rapidly, and by November 1923 had reached almost 92 trillion marks. With less than three per cent of government expenditure being met from income and with the cost of one dollar at four billion marks, Germany was in the throes of economic and social chaos. Starvation became a reality for millions of people, despite a bumper cereal harvest, as shops reverted to the barter system. Farmers refused to accept the effectively worthless, banknotes in exchange for grain, and food quickly began to run short in the cities. Prices rose one trillion-fold from their pre-war level. More importantly, for the long-term political future of Germany, the middle and working classes saw their savings wiped out. These were, in essence, the people who were later to become the hard-core of the Nazi vote. Economists will argue that runaway hyperinflation has two sources. Firstly, it arises through a fall in the foreign exchange value of a currency, when an adverse balance of payments reduces foreign investors demand for the currency. A falling exchange rate increases the cost of imports and, therefore, the cost of living. Wages rise as workers try to maintain their standard of living, especially if previous institutional arrangements have linked wages to living costs. Firms paying higher wages raise the price of the goods they sell, prices rise still further, the foreign exchange value of the currency falls still more, and the cycle continues. Secondly, it arises through a large budget deficit which no one believes will narrow in the future. I was lying in on a hard cold floor. My head was reeling with a thousand bright lights ââ¬â stars everywhere. Is this another apparition? The ghost of my father beckons me? I realized the cold floor along my back. The incessant throbbing in my head echoes a swosh, swosh sound ringing in my ear. The cold permeates me, my body is chilled but it does not move. The somewhat forgotten heaviness of responsibility returned and settled like a warm heavy cloak. Ah! what relief to shake it off. I lie there with the wet cold soaking through the wool and velvet of my coat and clothes to me and in me. I was wrong; there were no bright lights, only darkness. The sound receded to the distance, the throbbing in my head traveled to my temples and stayed there, as if to remind me that this is no apparition, as I had hoped it was, setting me free from this cursed mission to set things right. The knowledge surprised me into sitting up. The cold retreated somewhat. I knew now the source of the chill. It was the stone floor damp by the winter nightââ¬â¢s mist. The dark did not retreat as everything else had ââ¬â the pain in my head, the ringing in my ear and the cold. It was still dark ââ¬â blindingly so. Suddenly, there appears a glow of light in front of me like a white dot from afar, visible only because of the total darkness. Ah, the apparition. It reminded me of a star in a dark, moonless night. Only it was lonesome, like I usually am standing in the tallest turret of the castle watching the heavens. Only now, I am not in the turret warmly surrounded by a million stars of the heaven, I am in this long dank corridor guided by a lonesome star. I felt around the floor for what I do not know. I did not summon the servants, for some reason I sat there in the damp stone floor feeling for something. No such luck in the dark. The light was merely a white dot and not a confirmation of a long held suspicion. I became aware of a flowing wetness in my neck, leaking from my ear. I touched it. It was sticky. Blood? Mine? Where was I? I feel that I should be wearing something in my head ââ¬â my, mind, perhaps? I felt around some more, forgetting myself and crawling around in the dark like an animal. A poor animal not gifted with night vision. I stopped. Am I now mad in fact and not just in act? I stood up. The sudden movement sent me spinning. Was there an abyss in the castle? Why am I falling and spinning out of control. The bright lights threatened to come again. I closed my eyes fiercely. My head was pounding now. The swosh, swosh ringing in my ear threatened to return. I feel like I would embarrass myself as I keeled forward. Is it possible to embarrass oneself while alone in the dark? But what of embarrassment, have I not met with some maiden unkempt and uncouth to breathe deeply in her ear? Ah, madness, is it you? With closed eyes, I tried to stay still. The abyss, the pounding, and the ringing receded. They still threatened from a close distance but at least they were bearable and I was able to stay on my feet. Gingerly, I took a step forward, towards that white dot in the distance. The nausea came back but I conquered it. I took another step, and barely stayed on my feet. I raised my hand from my side and found a wall. Finally, support for my unfamiliar body. I made baby steps toward the bright light. I heard sounds. Is the ringing in my ear coming back to hunt me? No, it was different. It was like the rumblings of the sea from the distance. Am I still in Elsinore? As I draw nearer to light the sounds became the roar of waves. I remember the crash of waves in the moors. I could almost taste the salt in the air. I anticipate the fresh salty smell of the sea. It is what I need. Suddenly, I feel as if the hallway was suffocating me. The dark was closing near. I tried to make my way to light faster. My steps were small, but hurried, propelled by need to breathe in the sea. A soft breeze came to me. Ah! The sea, it beckons temptingly. The light became bigger. It became a slash, instead of a dot. It was long standing white line in the distance. The crash of waves became rumbles. The sea was gone even if the cool breeze remains, becomes more constant. The rumbles became murmurs. The words rush and tumble with each other, like a hurriedly spoken prayer, a long one from the sound of it. Taylor, Maslow, Alderfer, McClelland, Hertzberg, McGregor and Vroom. Reading Scientific Management Theory written by F.W Taylor I had different opinion and feeling on it. I used to work in a company where I had an assistant manager position, so I do have some management skills. I absolutely agree with a theory in a sense that any senior person should have a clear plan of work and give clear instructions to workers and sometimes even give a time limit to complete the task. But in the same time company management have to realize that this type of management is not suitable for every organization. Companies where people have to work on their own initiative, like a designers, marketing departments, staff in crà ¨ches will not be able to follow the whole system as their work mostly requires a creative approach. There are some evidences about it: when professional factory staff member left the company he brought his friend to cover his role. But anyway if he is not able to find a right person within the company he will place external advertising using employment agencies. People with bathroom industry experience will have a better chance to get a work. Even if a possible employee has a good knowledge of work he will be provided by training anyway. Usually fixed-term employee will spend their time on training. So it means company uses sit beside training system. Essential skills for administration positi on: fluent English, good phone manners and excellent customer service, flexibility, managing skills, experience of administrative job or job in the office, good time management, strong bookkeeping knowledge. Relevant experience of industry is not essential but can be an advantage. Manager will not spend a lot of time checking CVs. If person suits require needs manager will arrange interview with that person. The interview flow the simplest way. Manager and assistant will invite the interviewee to the company office and will go through person CV. Mainly manager will pay his attention on skills and experience. He tries to create relax atmosphere during the interview. Usually the manger asks to tell more about previous experience, about the company where interviewee worked, his/her actual duties and actual works carried out. Having a wide experience in that industry manager will easily spot if person is lying and do not have any previous experience. The simple technical questions will let him to understand it. If manager will satisfy his needs and interviewee happy with company rules, salary and other benefits, the person is likely to get a work. During a time when students were looking for a work experience I attended few interviews and it was much structural and formal rather than here in this company. I just have a phone conversation with the manager about my chosen course and my previous experience. Manager of the company likes give a chance to people as well. If they prove themselves as a strong, interested at work and hardworking employee, they will stay in the company even if they do not have enough skills- such an action might motivate people for great performance during probation period and achieving the goals. There is 6 month probation period in the company. As in every company Advanz Hydrotherapy is experiencing some problems with management system which affect company performance as well. In my opinion there is no ideal manager, as staff is always unhappy with something. Manager role is the hardest and the dirtiest role ever, so why this company has the same problem as everywhere. Because of personal business manager might be too stressful sometimes and that fact might affect staff members, what actually de motivate and upset them. Company does not have a proper marketing department employee, whose daily duties involve: web page updating, text messaging, e mailing, promotions and news update in the Facebook page and twitter desk. The person who looks after this part of job is like a contracted employee and works on distance. Office administration is not the right person for such a role as this is not what she likes to do and not what she was trained/studied for. Such a situation is demotivating; create a stress and challenging her. She also do not have a lot of pleasure completing such a task, but also she has no a time and so on this affect company performance as promoting and informal tools do not look strong, competitive enough. Whats more this is not done on daily basis and that affect task quality and consistency. Doing text messaging I realize that phone list is not up to date. Company received a reply from some customers asking to stop messaging. Customer list was not up to date and that annoyed some costumers. So this factor shows company unprofessional side. Being placed in the marketing department I did not have a strong leader beside me and could not became inspired to become interested in such a work. Because of that I do realize I dont want to have any future work connected with marketing. Researching a lot of competitor web pages I find out that a lot of companies are working hard on e-marketing tools and strongly push products in the internet. Advanz Hydrotherapy did not come close to sell products online, but actually it is very common at the moment. I do understand company does not have a budget for such a person at the moment. But anyway such a factor should not destroy wo rk system of office administrator. There are good points about selecting staff in the company as well, as factory staff is work a lot in their initiative, they are ambitious, creative and they most important is they do care about their work. When there was a busy time for the company guys were always stayed overtime and there were not just money matters as saying again they trying their best to provide an excellent customer service. Manager sees their work and always appreciates it, whats more he is always delighted when guys are coming with new ideas. Manager always asking advices about technical part of work what makes them fill part of the team, being important and valuable, and for sure this is affect quality of their work. I have never heard any customer complain about the baths during my work experience. Summarizing the information above I might say that well-chosen, properly motivated and valued on time employee brings mighty harvest for employer: self-discipline, quality of work, the time of execution and the consequence of all this is usually constant clients and their respect, trust to the company. From another way a dissatisfied workforce may result in low productivity, strikes which will in turn have an adverse affect on the wealth of the owner. Conclusion Concluding the report information I have to say that planning the interview and selecting the rights candidates might seems like as easiest part of Human Resources tasks. But actually it is involve a lot of painstaking subtasks like creating advertising, selecting the CVs, organizing the interviews. The main question what HR management has to answer is -who is the company ideal employee is and how they can describe him, what is an essential skills and education required. Advanz Hydrotherapy manager uses like a lazy style of planning the interview and selecting the rights candidates. Such a style might be related to small company business. There is no departmentalization separation in the company as manager carries a lot of duties himself including Human Resources. Recommendation Observing company HRM system there was some recommendation made: To hire professional marketing person who will strongly orientated on pushing company products. During the bad days manager have to control his patience, as it is very easy to lose staff respect and that will affect company performance Manager has to keep appreciate staff initiative when undertaking some tasks, as this is really motivate staff members Manager has to keep communicate as much as possible with staff members as this will keep team work spirit and inspire staff members for better performance.
